Cleaning terminology can be very confusing if you’re not familiar with it. All cleaning products and supplies have specific purposes, ingredients and definitions and can have serious consequences if not used properly or if the function is not understood. There’s such a wide range of different cleaning products and methods of cleaning, and it can be very easy for your mind to become muddled trying to figure them all out. We’re going to do the hard work for you and explain some common terms used in cleaning to help clear up confusion and make cleaning a little safer.

1. Antibacterial

This is a solution used to slow or kill bacteria growth. It is not effective against viruses, however. For cleaning, there are wipes, sprays, and liquids that have antibacterial properties you can buy.

2. Deep cleaning

There isn’t an exact definition for this one, however it normally means a more intense, thorough clean than usual.

3. Sanitisation

Sanitisation is the reduction – not removal – of up to 99.9% of microorganisms on a surface/object in under 30 seconds or less. A sanitiser should be used as per instructions and doesn’t affect fungi or viruses.

4. All-purpose

Normally refers to an ‘all-around’ cleaner that has multiple purposes for cleaning. Our GLASSGUARD™ Glass Restoration Stain Remover is a great example of an all-purpose product when it comes to glass cleaning. It can be used on any glass, tile or ceramic surface in and around the home.

5. Domestic cleaning

Domestic cleaning refers to activities conducted as part of general, maintenance cleaning of the home.

6. Mechanical cleaning

Hands-on cleaning, using abrasives to remove dirt and grime rather than chemicals.

7. Bleach

Bleach is a chemical that is used for lifting colour and stains, specifically noted for its whitening properties. We don’t recommend using bleach, but we DO recommend researching bleach safety if you MUST use it. It can be very dangerous if mixed with the wrong chemicals or used in the wrong way.

When cleaning is on your mind, it is important to know what certain terms are referring to. This is especially important for those not familiar with lots of different cleaning practices, so you aren’t misusing products and causing potential hazards within your home.
