The answer to this question may seem obvious to some, but do you really know how often you should clean your house? Have a quick read through this article and we’ll give you some tips for creating a cleaning schedule that suits your home.
Why is it important to clean regularly?
There are quite a few reasons to stick with a regular cleaning schedule. Here are a few of the most important ones…
Keep your home looking great
Cleaning your home shouldn’t really be prompted by having guests over, but in many households, that is certainly the case. We worry about what our visitors will think, so we rush to clean right at the last minute. Aesthetic appeal for others is a good reason to keep our homes clean, but aesthetic appeal for us, the people who live there, should also come into the equation. We shouldn’t just be trying to impress visitors, we should clean regularly for ourselves as well.
Reduce stress levels
A clean and tidy home can absolutely help reduce stress levels. When we know where things are kept, we’re less inclined to stress over thinking we’ve lost important items. When we’re not surrounded by clutter, our mind has one less thing (or many fewer things) to worry about.
Improve health and safety
Mess attracts a lot of things into our lives that we don’t necessarily want to hang around. Pests, disease, bacteria, injuries and many other health and safety risks are increased when we leave our houses dirty and cluttered.
How often should I clean my house?
This often isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. When trying to decide how often to clean your home, it’s best to jot down a few of the things that contribute to mess and how often they may need to be dealt with. For instance, the more people who live in the home, the more mess there is likely to be. This will mean more frequent cleans. The same goes for pets. Fur and pet mess like cat litter may need to be vacuumed every day.
Some general rules we tend to follow, outside of personal circumstances are…
- Daily cleaning tasks can include washing dishes, wiping down benchtops and tables and sweeping or vacuuming high-traffic areas.
- Weekly tasks might include cleaning the shower, dusting surfaces and washing bedding.
- Monthly tasks will be the bigger jobs like scrubbing floors, washing windows, deep cleaning the bathroom and cleaning appliances.
Hopefully, these general guidelines will help you prioritise your cleaning schedule, but always take the personal circumstances of your home into account and use common sense as your main guiding light.
