When it comes to creating a clean space, there are always safety aspects to consider, not just for us but for the surfaces we’re cleaning up. Here are 5 of our best tips for safely cleaning glass shower doors to avoid damage to the glass…and to yourself!
1. Throw away the harsh chemicals
Acidic or abrasive cleaners can damage the glass and corrode metal parts. Opt for a gentle, safe, non-toxic cleaning solution that won't damage the glass and surrounding surfaces, or cause harm to humans, animals or the environment. Most non-toxic options effectively remove soap scum, hard water stains, and grime without the negative effects.
2. Test a small area first
Much like we do with our own skin, before applying any solution to the entire glass door, test it on a small area to make sure it doesn't cause any adverse reactions. This way, you can be confident that the cleaner is safe to use on the entire surface without risking damage or discolouration.
3. Use gentle cleaning tools
Not only are gentle, non-abrasive cleaning tools safer for you to work with, but they’re also much better for the longevity of your glass shower door. Microfibre cloths are ideal for wiping down the glass without leaving lint or scratches. For stubborn spots, opt for a nano sponge specifically designed for glass cleaning. Never use metal scrubbers or hard brushes, as they can scratch the glass.
4. Make sure the room is well ventilated
Ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated, even when using non-toxic cleaning solutions. Open windows or turn on exhaust fans to allow fresh air to circulate. Not only will this ensure you have access to fresh air, but it will also help reduce condensation and fog on the glass to ensure a proper, streak-free clean.
5. Work in well-lit conditions
A relaxing, candle-lit bath or shower is a nice thought…but when you’re cleaning, the brighter the light the better. You’ll be stepping in and around the shower on surfaces that are likely wet and slippery. There are lots of sharp and dangerous items in a bathroom so being able to see them will help you avoid them. As a bonus, seeing the glass you’re cleaning means you’ll be able to clean more thoroughly and end up with a door that shines.
Keep these tips in mind when you next need to clean your shower door to help improve your own safety and reduce the risk of damage to the glass, surrounding areas and the environment in the process.
